公司名称的英语翻译
－、以偏概全的问题——“公司”并非“不是company，就是corporation”.
《企业名称的翻译问题》一文认为：“‘公司'的英语名称不是company（简缩词为Co. ），就是corporation（简缩同为Corp。）。”该文作者或许是为强调company与corporation乃“公司”的两个首选对应词才这么说的，但这样做毕竟有以偏概全和误导读者之赚。大家知道，在表示“公司”“及“企业”）之义时，英文中除了使用company和corporation，也不时使用“公司''广义上的对应词，诸如firm，house， business， concern， combine， Partnership， con1plex， group， consortium， establishment， venture， conglomerate， multinational，transnational等。就是在专有公司名称中，“公司”也决非只有company与corporation之说，lines，agency等也是名正言顺的“公司”，有时甚至是前老所不能替代的“公司”。具体说。
1．line（s）：（轮船、航空、航运等）公司。例如：Atlantic Container Line 大西洋集装箱海运公司。Hawaiian Air Lines，夏威夷航空公司
2．agency：公司，代理行。例如:
The Austin Advertising Agency 奥斯汀广告公司

二、轻言习惯的问题－－“保险公司”并非“都叫｀insurance company'
《实用翻译教程》一书中有这样几句话：“其次，特定的企业也会有自己用词的习惯，久而久之便成了行规，最典型的是｀保险公司'，无论哪个国家，也无论规模大小，都叫“insurance company'”，（刘季春，1996：204）《教程》作者是在讲述company与corporation的用法区别时说这段话的，其言外之意是说，“保险公司”的｀｀公司”
只能用company而不能使用corporation，因为习惯使然，倡事实并非如此，笔茬在《英汉对外贸易词典》第464和465两页上就见到了数家Insurance Corporation。它们是：

三、似是而非的问题——“office”非“支公司”
总公司”的几种常见英译法》一文中有这么几句话：｀｀无促如何由无法柑branch和一office看成是corporation或con1panv的同义词，就是说，在｀总公司'，｀分公司'或｀支公司'同时出现在一句中时，与｀总公司'（corporation）相对的只能是branch和office了。前者作｀分公司'解，后者作｀支公司'解”。（胡仲胤，1993：57）在我国，认为office就是天经地义的｀支公司；的人或许不在少数。实践中，“支公司”也确有译作office的（e.g. 中国丝绸进出口总公司广东省分公司汕头市支公司， China National Silk lmp．＆Exp. Corp. Guangdong Branch Shantou Office）。可有趣的是，笔者在上千家英文公司名称中竟未找到一家将corporation和office同用于口语并分别表示“总公司”和“支公司，，的。自己因此猜想这是否意味着在公司名称中汉英用词习惯有别了或者我们对office－词的理解有讹？带着后一个问题，笔者查询了部分英义工具书，总的看法是：office常作business解，有时也作concern和complex的同义词。而business有这么一种定义， a person，partnership， or corporation engaRed in commerce，manufacturing， or a service （Webster's Encyclopedia Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language， Updated Revised Deluxe Edition, P．283），由此定义不难看出，office无疑可以指从事商业或生产的corporation。因此，主观地把office与corporation对立起来的做法是欠妥的。其次，从以下几个同组的搭配及所表达的内涵中也不难得出office是“公司”而非“支公司”'的结论－head office：

看到网上有不少办理出国签证用的户口簿英文翻译模板，其中很多翻译不准确，甚至闹笑话，或者犯一些严重的原则性错误，可谓“误人子弟”（其中最不可容忍的，是将“民族，民族成分”译为nationality！甚至我所见过的几乎90%的“专业”翻译公司都这么译，真真正正地误人子弟！）。更重要的是，误导签证官，最终白白耽误驴友自己的工夫。现将标准版户口翻译件模板，以及英文个人信息填写指南贴上来，希望能够方便各位驴友。
译者的专业是法律，经常接触和处理一些外国的法律文件，因此对一些专用名词的翻译还是很有自信的。同时希望英文高手和法律专家对本模板提出宝贵意见，共同完善之，以造福广大驴友。

翻译及填写注意事项：
1．户号：Household number
注意，我不知道其他地区的户口簿中这个“户号”是如何打印的。北京的户号是红色字体，打印在表格外右上角。表格内“户号”一栏反而是空的。
填写的时候一定要注意，不要忘了将模板上的No. 88888888改为实际的户号。
2．集体户：Corporate
很多人将“集体户口”译为collective，是根据字面按照汉语思维做的机械翻译。译为corporate较为恰当。
非农业家庭户即为Non-agricultural family。 非农业集体户即为Non-agricultural corporate。 其他依此类推。
有的户口簿“户口类型”一栏不注明“农业”或“非农业”，直接就是“家庭户”或“集体口”。这种情况，建议译为Household of a Family 或Household of a Corporate。
2a．集体户口常住人口登记卡
——这绝对是个具有“中国特色”的名词。我琢磨了一下，建议这样翻译：Registry of De Jure Population in Corporate Household
其中，de jure是个法律术语，拉丁文，意思是“合法的”、“已注册的”；De Jure Population就是“常住人口”的概念。
有人翻译为Permanent Resident，不能说错。一个国家的Permanent Resident，就是这个国家的“永久居民”（不一定是本国公民，也可能是拿到“绿卡”、获得该国永久居留权的外国公民）。但是，对于一个城市，特别是对于一个“集体户口”内的人口，只能是“常住人口”，不可能是真正“永久”的人口。现在不是封建社会，是允许劳动力自由流动的。所以，一个“集体户口”内的“常住人口”不建议译为permanent resident，译为de jure population好一些，也比较能够“跟国际接轨”，呵呵。
或者可以回避这个问题，直接简单译为Information of Member。 2b．非亲属，可译为Non-relative，或者用形容词Non-relational 所谓“亲属（relative）”，既可能是“血亲（法律术语consanguinity）”，也可能是“姻亲（法律术语affinity）”。两者可以统称relative，对应的形容词是relational。
其他还有一些非正式的用语，如kinfolk、kinsfolk、kindred等，一般不作为法律术语使用，而且其意义都偏向于“血亲”，或者有“宗亲”、“氏族”等含义，不要乱用。
Descent虽然也是正式的法律术语，但其意义是“（以血缘关系为纽带的）宗族、血统、门第、世袭”。这里也不适用。
3．户主与户内成员的姓名
用英文填写后，再用汉字重复一遍，因为汉语名称是法定名称。比如，要向签证官证明，Zhang San就是张三。
4．派出所Police station；公安分局Public Security Sub-Bureau（市辖区级）；公安局Public Security Bureau（地、市、县级）；公安厅Public Security Department（省级）
5．户主或与户主关系
如果是户主本人，就填Householder himself或Householder herself。
与户主关系：纯正的英语是relation to。不用relation with，那是汉语式英语。
如果是户主的父母、配偶、儿女、兄弟、姐妹，直接填Father / Mother / Husband / Wife / Son / Daughter / Brother / Sister即可，不需要加Householder's / His / Her，也不需要加elder / younger来区分兄/弟或姐/妹。
